Crush strength of a paver good enough?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi everyone, I'm having my domestic drive re-done, mostly with shingle but for the first metre at the road side which was going to be a clay paver (Keswick Blend) which has a crush strength of 7.5n. The bricks will be bordered probably by granite setts both to protect the edges of the Keswick pavers (as cars drive on and off the pavers on to the shingle) and to keep the pavers in place. However, my builder is not convinced of the suitability of the Keswick pavers (he hit one with a hammer and it broke!) He feels that they are not strong enough for domestic cars (I have a small 4x4). I would be very grateful for your views and what sort of compressive properties of pavers I should be looking for! Many Thanks Cal Additional Info: Thank you Peter for your quick reply. My builder was concerned that the vibration plate would also damage the pavers (he was going to bed them on sand at 50mm and a sub base of 100mm).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

50mm paving blocks are built to with stand the sort of car you drive, but to satisfy you mind lay them on a stiff strong bed of 3 and 1 (sharp sand and cement) not wet not to dry, ie- when you grab an handful it stays together, put this in 100/150mm deep and bed blocks in, anyblock you hit with an hammer will break, its obvious this guy does not no what is is doing, get a groundworker to to the job not a builder Peter
