Circuit not receiving power from Breaker - Breaker OK / Non GFCI Circuit

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.51 PM

So I heard a slight buzzing from my breaker panel. Flipped breakers until I found the one that was associated with the buzzing. Breaker was controlling about 6 outlets on one room. Flipped it back on and buzzing had stopped - but power not restored to circuit. Flipped it on and off (hard to make sure it tripped). Still nothing. Thought maybe a bad breaker - turned it on and checked power across the breaker - still reading fine. Removed and inspected all of the outlets - no wiring issues visible. So now, breaker when turned on still hums slightly (it is not an arc fault fault breaker either), appears to be delivering power, but nothing at the outlets since I turned it off that first time. Ideas?

As domestic circuit breakers in the UK are mainly single pole, if you have proved the breaker is fine, then it has to be a neutral fault. Have you tried testing line voltage to earth at the outlets? If the L to E voltage is 230/240 and there is no voltage between L to N then it would prove that there is a neutral fault somewhere?

Presuming you are not able to test using proper test equipment so you are guessing that there is no power at outlets could be either loose live or neutral at board. Sounds like a simple fix but get a qualified electrician to sort it out as in domestic areas only registered electricians should be working inside a consumer unit.
