External window ledges - plasterer or stonemason to re-cement ledges before repainting?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.09 PM
Hello! We're in the process of having new windows fitted & once completed will scrap off any loose/weathered paintwork on external window ledges etc. Do I require a plasterer or a stonemason to provide a quote to re cement the ledges to a smooth finish before repainting? Advice & referral welcomed! Many thanks

You can use either tradesmen as long as they are aware of the procedure. They should tell you that the cement needs to be "primed", which would indicate that they know what they're doing!

If it is a stone building it would be advised to not use cement at all as this inhibits the natural properties and can lead to problems with masonry decay, water ingress, and damp.
If it is a surface repair of the window sills you are looking for I would recommend either a lime mortar, or a lithomex repair, as these are both suitable to stone builds.

If it's a stone building you will require a stonemason. He Will probs use lithomex to repair cill. It's a lime base stone repair mortar. Do not let anyone put a cement mortar on a stone building

Assuming it is a stone house you would require a stonemason. Or a lime specialist. They would use a lithomix lime based mix to carry out the stone repairs. Never use cement on a stone building as this just leads to more decay
