Varnish or paint wood paneling / MDF

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.09 PM

Hello everyone. Me and my partner have just purchased our first house and the previous owner loved his wood and varnish, this aint a bad thing as we like our rustic feeling. Now as you walk into the front door we have wood paneling going up the steps approx a meter tall. The paneling looks like wood but when we sanded down the paneling my partner in crime went too far and got to what looks to be MDF. We was at first going to Under coat and Paint the Paneling white egg shell but decided to go back to varnished wood as it will take the rustic feel away. Tonight i went to varnish the paneling but were we sanded it back too far it looks like it wont cover the white bits. Please help with some options we can do. Many thanks Tim

Prime & paint white as you first intended. You will never get the same finish across the panel if you try to revarnish. You will always see the bit's you have taken back to the bare surface. I would NOT try to sand back to a uniform finish as it will take forever & you WILL damage the MDF surface.

I would still rub it down past the varnish, undercoat, then finish it. I am about to do panelling down a staircase in our house.....it has a really nice smooth surface to paint straight onto. Wear a mask when sanding it down, as there is moody fumes from the lacquer and especially the MDF
