When i turn on the hot water, the heating comes on

When i turn on the hot water the heating comes on. I have an old system - not a combi boiler. My own research tells me that it would appear that the valve is sticky or the motorised valve needs to be replaced. Maybe there is an other reason?? Please can you tell me what sort of person would fix this?

Your heating system may be either 'S' plan or 'Y' plan so I would assume your heating diverter control valve is stuck in the mid position if 'Y' plan or if 'S' plan the diverter valve on the heating side is also stuck in the open position. Certainly not a job for the home owner, so best call a heating engineer to make good repairs.

You would need a plumber for this job and it sounds like the Motorised valve is sticking, get the valve replaced which should cost around £150 for the part and labour from a reliable plumber.

Sounds like the three port valve is letting by hot water into the heating
