told to replace 2 year old flat roof with no problems, because we walk on it
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.05 PM
Just over 2 years ago we had our flat roof totally replaced. It now consists of 3 layers of bitumen paper. On top of that is tanalized wood supporting composite, 25 year lifespan, composite decking. A builder has told us we should not walk on bitumen paper flat rooves even though we are really walking on decking supported by wood on 3 layers of bitumen paper. We are disappointed we are being told to replace a flat roof with no reported problems just because he occasionally walk on it. Is this advice correct?

it is correct that you shouldn't walk on bitumen paper as this is not what it is designed for. the fact that you have some sort of decking on top of it is also not ideal as the pressure of a person walking on this could cause the corner of a piece of wood to pierce the roof covering, especially as the older the bitumen paper gets the more brittle it becomes. ideally for a roof that is going to be used for human traffic, asphalt should be used or at the very least fibreglass

I agree with the above builder. Felt is ideal for rabbit hutches. Fibreglass is the best option.
