Worried about felt roofing for outdoor office

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.05 PM

Hi, we are just getting an outdoor office built (6inch block type) everything really solid so far all the groundwork great and workmanship has been good. What I am concerned about is that they are going to be doing the roof part tomorrow. So far there all the wooden beams (angled beams for water runoff) are running across the top which is fine and then there is hefty chipboard type sheets on them. so far so good BUT they said that they weren't going to 'torch' the protorch roofing felt they have, they are just going to nail it down as it is so thick it will be fine. Also I cant see any underlay for it, but looking online it looks like a thick black plastic material and they do have a massive roll from the DPC layer, could they use that? would that be the same sort of thing to keep out any water? my concerns are more about the 'underlay' material and also the non torching of the pro torch. Many thanks. Oh yes and they are builders, recommended by a renderer that I used and found on mybuilder.com - not doing this myself!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

sorry but as soon as you put nails through a flat roof that's a leak waiting to happen, if it torch on it should be torched, first layer underlay tacked. good luck Alex

Hmmm... Building Regulations ..... You have not mentioned insulation, are you planning to work in this office in winter, if it heated then you need to consider insulation. I would only use felt on a rabbit hutch. It only last circa 10 years (no matter what builders and roofers say). Your vapour barrier should be foil backed plasterboard. if you put a DPM beneath the felt it may cause condensation....sounds like a roof about to fail, and a cold office in winter. You must never nail through torch on felt. Felt is not the best method and EPDM rubber is far longer lasting. You make no mention of insulation. If this is to be a habitable building no insulation will cause problems

Putting holes in a flat roof just sounds ludicrous just screams out leak ! And I would recommend grp ( fibreglass) or epdm they will out live a felt roof and look much tidier
