New pine doors are bowed

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

Three of our four newly hung pine doors are bowed, with gaps of up to one cm between door and frame. The carpenter who fitted them said that this happened because the doors are made of solid timber and that they will straighten out if we keep them closed. We do not think that brand new doors should be bowed and we have not had this problem before, even in the days when we were buying cheap doors from B&Q. And we can't see how keeping them closed will make them straighten out. Should we ask the carpenter who supplied and fitted the doors to replace them? Or is it correct that they will straighten out if kept closed? Any advice gratefully received.

The doors may straighten slightly once hung but it's unlikely they will get 100%, if the carpenter supplied them, he shouldn't have accepted them in the first place if they were bowed, I would ask for new doors to be supplied. Unless the doors are obviously warped when you look at them, also worth checking that the door jamb is plumb and straight, if it tapers down at any point it will hold the door off, I've certainly encountered that more than warped doors.

Hello, it is rare that doors are bowed and the carpenter should have spotted this. especially during the fitting process. He should have taken them back. This sounds more like the lining is out and he hasn't rectified this. it is very unlikely these will straighten . if anything its more likely they will warp more. I would also recommend checking the door lining is square, level and 'in wind' . you will have to sight from outer edge to opposing outer edge with door open. to ensure the legs are parallel. I would ask for the doors to be changed.
