Replacing a gas fireplace with electric fireplace - how should I seal hole in the wall?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.51 PM

I am currently decorating a downstairs room and have removed the Gas Fireplace aswell as the surround. I am now left with a hole in the wall. Money is tight so we have looked at putting in an Electric Fire complete with surround. However, I am wondering how I should seal the hole in the wall so that the new fire can sit flush against it. Will I also need to vent the sealed chimney ? I am quite stuck so would welcome some advice. Thanks.

you can seal with various materials, the most substantial would be to block the hole up and plaster the blockwork so you can then finish with paint or wallpaper to match your room. You could if money is tighter block the hole up with an aluminium plate and use gas tape to seal to the wall. In both instances you will need to install a vent, this will allow your chimney to breathe and stop sulphur deposits bleeding through in time, through the chimney breast.
