Rewiring the 1st floor of house
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
We need to rewire the 1st floor of a 1930's 3 bed house. How long should it take? All the wiring circuits coming in to the house are easily accessible in the basement and all the floors are wooden.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi,
From experience I would estimate a full rewire of a 3 bedroom flat would take approximately 7 days.
However, all depends on how the work is done. You may decide to do it in 2 stages; First Fix; which is to run all the cabling, chase the walls and fit all the back boxes and then have the plastering done before the Second Fix of light fittings, sockets and switches are done; this is sometimes the best way as it makes it easier for the plasterer to repair and make good the walls and ceilings without having to worry about unscrewing all the sockets, lights and switches from the wall and it also avoids getting all the accessories dirty.
Other factors such as fitting spotlights throughout may also increase the length of time to complete the works.
Hope this helps you make an informed decision.
Best.

Approx 2 days . One day for the lighting circuit in the loft and one day for the sockets.
If you're doing the work as DIY, you must apply for and pay your local authority to get Part P building regulation consent for the works. Failure to get consent could mean you end up getting fined (currently £5000).

Hi
Time really depends on what you wish to re wire eg lighting and power etc... then what type of accessories you plan to use , Do you then want to chase in the sockets and have downlights in the ceiling Also has the fuse board been upgraded for RCD Protection considering the plan is to make alterations and possibly additions to the circuits. My question would be why just the 1st floor what leads you to believe that it needs rewiring. Regards Matt
