How long should I leave before putting up wallpaper and hanging things on wall of a new build?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
I have recently purchased a new build, I'm pretty sure the walls are mostly built, I will not officially move in until December. I have a few bits and bobs to hang on walls....and a few walls I would like to wallpaper, asap. What should I do and shouldn't do in terms of hanging things and putting up wallpaper, as if the walls have been built, that's about 6 months before I will move in. I've heard you need to wait up to a year!!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will be able to hang anything on the walls. As for wall papering, this depends on if the walls have been hardwalled then a finish skim on top or just skimmed over plasterboard which would be my bet.
In both cases you would still be able to hang paper if you know what you are doing papering on new plaster can be tricky. what you need to do is size your walls with sizing paste the day before you hang the paper, if you are getting a decorator he just let them know if they are a professional they will know what to do.

6 to 12 months is fine to start putting your mark on the house.
To carry out the papering the sequence would be
1. Rub down the walls.
2. Apply a coat of paste, (I have used Solvite for over forty years, never let me down,) which is also perfectly acceptable to use as a size.
3. Cross line the walls with 1000 grade lining paper.
4. Hang the finish wallpaper.
