Fitting a stove in a downstairs flat - upstairs flat won't be able to use their fireplace?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.05 PM
I want to buy a downstairs flat in a large old house with a big fireplace and the chimney is intact. I have been told I can't do this as then the upstairs flat won't be able to use their fireplace. Is this right? Is it possible to check this without bothering the upstairs people? ....... Many thanks, I can't see how to reply to you, so adding here... I will get someone to do the smoke test for me asap!

A stove will need to have a flue running from it through the chimney to roof top.
Best have a stove fitter check it out for you

Hi , check the roof , if the chimney has two pots there were originally two chimneys. Cheap and easy test get some smoke pellets (horrible smell) tell your neighbour to open their fireplace , light the pellet and stick in your fireplace and hold a board to seal off temporarily . Nothing should come out of their's and white smoke should come from only one pot on the roof . That's the advice of an old Gas engineer (me) . Take nothing for granted with flues they are lethal any doubts at all have them swept and surveyed . Steve
