Damp problem in old house - how to treat flaking and bubbling paintwork
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.04 PM
House has been repointed but rooms have visible flaking, bubbling paintwork, how do I treat this please? ie should I treat walls in some way prior to re decorating? Repainting done in summer 2013, thanks.

My advice would be as long as original underlying problem has been rectified.i would scrape back and sand any flaking bubbling paint, then use trade damp proof paint(johnstones excellent)and apply to the affected areas.allow a full day to dry.sometimes rarely you have to repeat process and allow a day in between to dry if dampness was severe.after that skim area with filler and sand.after that you will be ready to progress to the next stage however you choose to decorate.i hope this has been helpful.kind regards michael.Acorn decorators.

while you say it has been re-pointed, was this with natural hydraulic lime mortar, if it was a cement based pointing then your problems will only get worse as cement pointing is to strong for the brick work and traps water behind the cement in the structure of the building as their is no cavity this will transfer as dampness into the inside of the property sorry
should you wish any further information on older property's just ask.
