How you doing I have been rendering for some time now , the reason behind the slurry mix or scud coat is to stop the scratch coat sliding down and It provides a great key especially on block work, common bricks have a key in them when they are made unlike blocks although blocks can be very dry so a good soaking down before hand is advised . Good luck its a messy job.
