My ceiling joists are 400 mm centres, can I cut one out to make a 600 mm loft hatch?

I have a hand cut roof, my ceiling joists are at 400 mm centres. my loft hatch is too small, can I cut a ceiling joist out to make a 600 mm loft hatch or will it affect the structure of the roof ?

yes you can, providing it is suitably braced and supported, its a fairly easy task to undertake with moderate carpentry skills

This would not be a problem however you would need to put cross members to tie in the cut rafter to either rafter on each side ( support for cut rafter) to create your 600mm opening
