Is skirting necessary? is it OK to add skirting after carpets and tiles have been laid?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.08 PM
We have just built a new home and skirting wasn't included. Now that the house is near completion, the tiles and carpets are all laid I'm thinking it would've been a good idea to add skirting. Does anyone know if it's really necessary? and if you can easily add skirting once the tiles and carpet have been added?

You can fit skirting after tiles have been laid. It some times gives a better finish but if you ever change the tiles you may need to lift and re-fit skirting. You don't have to have skirting at all but is there to protect the plaster walls from being damaged by chair legs etc.
Assuming the plaster has been finished down to floor level its your choice.
Re fitting skirting over carpets you would be better to fit skirting then trim carpet.

Skirting protects damage from vacuum cleaners being pushed up against the wall, it also makes a distinct finish between wall and floor, when laying laminate flooring it is perfect for covering the gaps around

Yes you can fig skirting after tiling has been done ans also after carpey has been laid. Skirting wouldnt be needed on a tiled wall but could give it a finished look

You can fit skirting after tiles have been fitted, this allows the finished cuts of the tiles to be covered and leaves a great finish. However with carpet you’re better fitting the skirting before as the carpet will butt up to the skirting for a better finish as it would if you fitted the skirting after.
