Underfloor heating, lighting and fan for refurbished Shower room.
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.04 PM
We would like to install underfloor heating as part of a shower-room project should we employ a qualified electrician? What qualifications should we expect the electrician to have? Would the same electrician be qualified to install new down-lights in the bathroom ceiling and also an extractor fan that works independent of the light switch? Many thanks!!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

They need to be in one of the competent person schemes (NAPIT, NICEIC, ECA, Elecsa, BSI) but don't be fooled by what badge they're wearing as these are paid for schemes, not a qualification.
Should have electricians certificate and some form of testing qualification - you could ask if they're JIB approved (not a must, but it will show on the card what qualifications they have)
Ask how long they've been an electrician and ask for references if unsure.
Unfortunately rogues can be qualified.

Yes it would be necessary for you to have an electrician to install the underfloor heating as it is an electrical item within a special location (bathroom). This means the electrician would need to be Part P registered and approved by a governing body ( such as NIC EIC). This registration means that they will have the insurance and qualifications etc to carry out your work safely, and would be capable of also installing your extractor fan and downlights etc too
