Bad patio paving by local tradesman

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

I recently had my patio and path re-paved. From a distance it looks good, and I think this is due to using quality materials. However, on closer inspection there are clear faults. Now, I can handle small things, like some slightly uneven stones - lesson learned there for using the man I did. However, around the edge of the raised patio area the edging pavers (setts?) are badly cemented and already loose. I'm worried this is unsafe for the kids. Also, I'm not sure if this is usual, but while he cemented the main large pavers, the edging setts don't have cement in between (some do, but this looks accidental!). It seems to me that this will mean I spend my life trying to get rid of weeds from the border, but would there be a reason for him leaving it like this? There is also just a lot of mess left - large amounts of cement around the edges - would I be expected to clear this up myself? Our chap keeps promising to come back but no show as yet...

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Unfortunately you will end up having to lift the edging stones and fixing them in correctly. If the correct size edging stone has been used and the levels of the paving and edging have been done correctly then the edging stone should have been laid on a bed of morter or concrete and grouted or morter in between although morter inbetween depends on the edging used. Unfortunately if the job is bad its bad and won't last. Hope you get it sorted and may I suggest to you and others to check credentials and references and not just go by who gives the cheapest quote.

You certainly shouldn't have to clean up after your contractor, they should leave the job in tip top condition. Messy work is a sign of a lazy or unskilled workman.
