Damp Proofing

Damp but PIV doesnt cure it (its better, but still bad)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

Myself and two neighbours live just over the brow of a hill. Our road runs horizontal across the hill but has a slight dip or lowest point at our properties. There is a street drain there. After council inspection it is damaged, but looking at the damage on the scope I cant believe this is the sole source. There are no leaks on my water/waste system. My 1960s bungalow has solid concrete floor throughout and my neighbours are mostly suspended. I really don't want the upheaval with internal work and was hoping for some advice on the following idea, which is to: Dig a narrow trench 1 meter deep around three sides of the bungalow, avoiding all services. Then to put a curtain of plastic sheet in the trench on the three sides of the property and refill. In your opinion would this deflect the moisture around and away downhill from the property? therefore, do you think this would this work?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You're on the right track but I would suggest not using plastic sheeting but a special membrane which is ideal for this situation, also something I've done in the past which is raking deep into the brickwork and re-pointing using a machine to inject mortar straight into the brick joints as this is a much better system than traditional pointing, then backfill with a clear stone then use a French drain system channelled away from your property. Hope this helps
