Should I lift old flooring before carpet fitter comes?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.50 PM
Hi, Im looking to get carpet fitted in two rooms in my new house - Lounge and bedroom. There's laminate in those rooms just now, would a carpet fitter expected that to be lifted before he arrives or will he lift it? Also i have bought the carpet from one shop and the underlay online what else do i need? Grips etc? thanks

A fitter would charge you for taking the old laminate up, just like a decorater would charge for stripping walls.
You could fit on top, but thats is like putting wall paper on top of wall paper !
If you do that, then it needs to be gripper glued first and left, until set ( this will cost as two trips and glue), so the best things; if you can is get a freind to take it up. ( saves you doing it ! ) As soon as the first couple comes up; its like picking up cards.
The fitter will also, unless he is hard up for work, will charge you for gripper and fitting the underlay. ( that's why its cheap online ) its DIY
The fitter should also tape joints and gripper fitted at the correct distance ( two nails in every piece of gripper regardless of size)
It depends on how good a job you want done, from what i have seen with the sheds and the fitters that are coming out. If you want it done cheap. I would fit it myself; especially if they are two rooms.
If you are fitting them yourself ? The gripper should be set 2/3 the thickness of the carpet.
Hope that helps

hi, you have 2 options you can fitt on top of laminate or remove laminate yourself or ask the fitter to remove it but he will charge you for lifting it, you will also need door plates as your previous ones were for laminate plates and grippers. normally a lot of fitters carry door plates with them. thanks
