I am having a new shower fitted and not sure what type of pump i need

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.36 PM

My system is traditional cold water tank in the loft, hot water cylinder tank in airing cupboard on landing opposite the bathroom, so on the same floor level of where the shower will be fitted. Could you help which type of pump do i need positive or negative. Thanks in advance susan

Hi Susan, you will need a positive head shower pump for your installation. Regards, Neil

Hi Susan, Because the shower head is likely to be close to height of water in tank as on same floor, you need a Negative Head pump which works on pressure change, not flow. You can buy pumps that will automatically alternate between Positive and Negative head. You will likely have the problem that the tank will be too small to feed both hot/cold water, so I would suggest that you convert cold water feeds to cold mains supply, which now leaves your Cold Water Storage Tank only supplying Hot Water Cylinder and then have a Single Impeller Negative Head Pump fitted to your Hot Water supply from the Cylinder and also fitting a Surrey Flange to the Hot Water Cylinder to avoid air locks.
