Brand new slates snapping and falling off the roof

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi, I purchased my cottage a few years ago and sadly the previous owners had had the slates coated in bitumen paint many years ago. The roof was leaking bad and slates not stuck down were slipping. All the slates had to be scrapped. I bought Spanish Contessa Slates and the roofers felted, battened and fixed the new slates. The roof took 1650 slates to cover. My question is the roof is now 3 years old and so far 5 slates have snapped, always in a straight line from nail hole to nail hole and fallen off. Three times the roofers have been back to put new replacements up. Why is this happening ? the roofers say is just a couple of weak slates got overlooked, is this true ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes this sounds like a few "flawed" slates, as slate is a natural material It is a common problem and easily repaired, hope this helps

Yes unfortunately this can happen with a lesser grade of slate, just hopefully your roofer has identified all of them
