Extensions

My builder has had my plans for my small extension 3m x 8m for nearly 5 months. The steel is due to go in and now he is questioning the size of the steel? He says its too large. I have had the calcs done by a structural engineer and paid for them. He now says that the steel is not available off the shelf, I've googled it and its available in 2/3 days, should alarm bells start ringing.
It sounds like he hasn't really looked too far into it and isn't too organised. He may be talking from experience as I had a similar issue on an extension last year. An inexperienced structural engineer went severely over the top on beams and after I had put them in after much discussion the building inspector laughed his head off asking when the skyscraper was being started. He does really have to go with it though as he isn't qualified to make that decision and building control will want to see it done that way. Don't be too hard on him, he may be right!!

I would say yes because i think he has under priced and trying to find a way of getting more money out of the job

Hello, Why not go back to the structural engineer and ask if the steel section can be reduced in size by increasing the weight of the steel. The engineer may have chosen a beam which the steel fabricator does not keep in stock. Best wishes Andrew
