Plastering & Rendering

are cracks and nails showing through normal after 5 month old plaster?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.50 PM

Hi, I had new ceilings plastered 5 months ago. Plasterer came and skimmed plaster board. We now have a crack down the middle where there was once a decorative beam and in other room ceilings we have circles comeing lose which I presume is the plaster falling from the nail/screw attaching the plaster board. The builder put the plasterboard up for the ceilings and a plasterer skimmed. Is this something I should pay to put right myself, can I go back to plasterer or is it down to the builders? --- Additional Thank you David. I don't know if they used nails or screws. All you can see round the edges is circles coming away from the ceiling. I presume its from the nail/screws holding it up. I can supply photos if it helps but i don't know how to upload the to this site. the ceiling with the crack was just skimmed over after they took the decorative beam out. These defult started showing earlier but the builders said thats what you should expect and its nothing to do with their work. Problem is the nails or someone referred to them as pops are increasing in number.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi . As far as holes appearing in the plaster can I ask if you know if the builder used screws or nails. If clout nails were used the plaster will always pop of of these. As for the cracks appearing, this could be that the plasterer has not scrimmed the plasterboard, which you may or may not know is a mesh tape that is put up on to all of the joins in the plasterboard to stop cracking. Was the ceiling where the beam was plasterboarded or just skimmed over? Regards David Hi It sounds as if the ceiling that has just been skimmed hasn't been taped up, where the beam was or when the beam has been taken out, no additional screws we're put in place under the beam. Or both. The other ceilings where the plaster is popping from nail or screw heads, is where there is movement in the ceiling joists, which will move the plasterboard therefore causing the plaster to pop. Hope this helps
