Bathroom Fitting

Is it cheaper to hire tradesman separately or get a firm to do all the work

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.04 PM

I need a new boiler, kitchen and laundry refitted, new fuse box, possibly new wiring, 2 bathrooms refitted, cloakroom refitted, a couple of new radiators, 1 radiator moved slightly, 1 room replastered, i room plastered to cover artex, ridge tiles and verges re pointing, repair to wooden fashias, new guttering/drainpipes, replacement back door and windows. is it better to hire individual tradesman or a firm to do everything?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In my experience it's cheaper to hire a firm to do all the work as they would normally give you a good discount for the amount of work you are going to give them, which in your case is a lot. If you get a different trade for every job it's highly unlikely they will discount you on smaller jobs as the jobs are probably not big enough to give discount

Hi, It's worth asking for a quote first... For say your bathrooms/kitchen, as these are quite detailed projects, you'll find that a good installer/fitter would have all the contacts you'd need and would be trusted to themselves. They would have used them time and time again and would not recommend anyone they wouldn't be happy to work behind, additionally, you keep everything simple and amicable between trades, not to mention keeping the project economical by missing out the contractor/middleman. Hope it helps out.

I personally think that hiring a firm is going to be more costly as the owner wants to be able to make his/ her bit on top of the trades persons wage, not only that they have got a lot more expenses compared to a sole trader ie :- holiday pay for employees, sick pay, advertising etc. I also think that bigger company’s always pay the workers a flat rate and always make money on the people working for them other wise it wouldn’t be worth while them having staff and that’s just the way of the world/ business
