Attaching skirting to already painted walls so it does not fall off

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

Hi please can people help ???? We attached skirting ( primed mdf ) to newly painted walls with gripfill then caulked the gaps but a lot have dropped off and I am sure the rest soon will. I don't think they liked the matt/vinyl finish of the painted walls. Not sure whether to remove the skirting, sand down the walls, wash and then reapply with grip fill OR nail gun ( skirting will then only be attached to thin plasterboard ) OR stick wooden wedges in the 10mm gap left under the skirting and caulk ( but this may allow it to fall forward and the carpet fitters usually wedge the carpets into this gap ) Any suggestions of how to fix them back without them falling off or causing us further problems ??? Thank you for you help !!! ////// Thanks for your reply !!! - Its going to be a mission but I think you're right - its the only way to go

Hi. There should be a timber sole plate behind the plasterboard, fixed to the floor. It will normally be a piece of 3x2, so at a rough guess, or measure an inch up from the floor and pre drill some holes in your skirting board as not to split it, then countersink the hole, screw into the sole plate behind the plasterboard that is fixed to the floor, job done
