water heater switch change of use?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.50 PM

have just bought a new house. there is a live water heater switch that leads to a junction box in the loft. the wiring stops there as the water heater has been removed. i was wondering if there is a safe way to connect a light to this wiring to turn the water heater switch into a light switch for the loft. hope that makes sense. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi Ian, If you look inside your fuse board there should be a circuit described there as water heater. If you can tell what the amp rating of that circuit breaker/fuse is you can work it out from there. Is the switch for the water heater a Fused connection unit (FCU)? (has a fuse plate on the front of it). If so then simply change that for a 5 amp fuse. If not then change the breaker in the board for a 6 Amp breaker. But really you need an electrician for this. If it is an FCU, Isolate the circuit in the fuseboard and connect a fitting to the junction box with 1.5mm Twin and Earth cable, or suitable flex. Then power on and hey presto. :) Regards John

Agree with Connect Electrical. Its an easy job to do, even easier for a qualified electrician to do...If your'e not a 100% I'd leave well alone. It wont be much for electrician to do these works and then you get the peace of mind its been done correctly.
