What would an extension with a glazed roof be?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.37 PM
Is there a technical name? I know there is orangery, basically the extension I'm thinking of will have french doors one end, and the entrance doors the other - the roof needs to allow light in as the extension will be to the boundary (or as far as the planning authority (Chiltern [High Wycome]) will allow. The house is a semi-detatched Victorian.

you would call it a orangery if the roof was shaped as a atrium( a bit like a triangular prism ) and a sun room if the roof is just sloped.
but you can build out 3m along the boundary under permitted
development rights but since its a semi the may allow more under planning
one last thing, it wouldn't be called cold as it would be built to building regulation as an extension and would have the same u-values as any other extension

It can be built under permitted development and if you can have 50% glass area on the walls it can be classed as a conservatory and therefore wouldn't need building regs even though it would be built to building regs standard. Therefore saving you the expense of paying for building regs. It wouldn't be cold because you can spec the glass to 'A' rated units which again would meet building regs.
