Knocking brick out - do i need a lintel?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

Hi.. I wonder if you can help. I have a doorway in my kitchen leading through to a porch/ downstairs toilet. I want to keep the same door way but make it 30cm wider and knock the brick out on the top so it's flush with the ceiling and make it a walk through so there will be no door. I'm just in the middle of doing all the house (they all seem to be brick walls) The question is do I need a lintel on line with the ceiling to support where I've knocked the brick out above the door. I've not yet looked at the joist and where they lye but I know there is no direct wall above either. please help! I'm in the Manchester area so if someone wants to come an look??

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if there is brickwork above the door you will have to remove existing lintel, if the joists were supported by the wall be carefull, but if not and you should'nt have a problem if there's no wall above, I would ask someone who knows to be honest, could be dangerous and costly otherwise. Ken

If is brickwork there must be a lentil by Building Regs, if so, support above remove the door and the current lentil brakedown to get the right oppening, get a new longer lentil and install same place. Plase be aware that if it is a loadbearing wall ( the walls that support the weight of above floor or external wall), you may need a structural engineer to have a look to tells you the right lentil that will fit there in instructions how to get it done. Along with the structural engineer calculations you may need as well to notice the council regarding building work that take place. They will send an inspector to ensure is all safe.
