Loft Conversion

Do we need to bring a loft room up to current building regs to add new velux and stair case

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

Hello We're buying a terraced house which has a loft conversion that was done a long time ago, and has been signed off by building regulations. The stairs are in a really bad position and we would like to change where they are, as well as add more velux windows. My question is do we have to bring the whole loft up to current building regulation standards (which it definitely isn't) to change the placement of the stairs and add windows? Or will building regs just come and inspect the stairs and windows to sign them off? We will make sure the stairs and windows do comply with current building regs. Thanks

For a definitive answer you need to consult with building control but my view would be no you don't. As long as the loft is already functioning as habitable space then you are simply making internal alterations and improvements which as you rightly say should be to the correct current standard.
