Paint kept discolouring along joint of old paint line

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.04 PM

Hi I had a large damp patch appear on a bedroom wall at the top. Once the cause was fixed and it dried out the paint was left bubbled and almost powdery. I sanded it all back to bare plaster and feathered the edges of the old existing paint then gave it a good coat of stain block all over followed by several coats of emulsion. However the paint just kept discolouring along the joint of the old paint line. This discolouring was coming through almost immediately before the paint was even dry. Anyone have any ideas?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi use an oil based under coat to cover the stained area, allow to dry, this will form a barrier for your new water based paint to stick to,the water content in the emulsion was reactivating the stain

Hi the best solution would be to use an oil based paint i.e undercoat or primer. Because its a damp stain which is water a water based paint wont kill the staining. 100% an oil based paint then when dry apply emulsion. Hope that helps
