Will 5 day plastering course teach me to be able to plaster a small box room?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi I have a very small box room that needs plastering. I've asked a few people about the cost and a lot of them are quoting me about £300 for walls and ceiling. I'm actually a keen diyer and thinking of doing it myself. I was looking at a few training centres that offer a 5 day basic plastering course for about the same price as the quotes I was getting. My question is do you think the 5 day course is good enough to teach me the very basics of plastering for me to complete the job myself? I know it won't be a professional finish but it's only a small bedroom I'll probably use for storage anyway. I live in east london so would like to do a course locally if possible.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Pay to get it done, I've been doing it for 16 years. Don't waste money on course, you CAN NOT LEARN TO PLASTER IN 5 days

this depends on the modules, with the 5 day plastering what is covered, as mentioned above there are many scenarios that can arise, will the course cover this/ product ranges/ contamination/ methods ? i think the question is after paying for the course plus taking 5 days out, before buying materials and confidently under taking the work, can you afford to pay a trade to come in after wards and start ? if this is a risk worth taking then i would highly recommend further development

As an ex plastering lecturer And being a a plasterer for 30 years ! It is not possible for you to skim a room with completing a 5 day course to a good standard. It takes years of practice and practice even after doing a 3 year apprenticeship, these people offering a 5 day course is very worrying. Your best option is to pay the money for a re skim and leave to the professionals. Hope this helps. Good luck

If Im honest I think fair play and give it a go if it's your own property, but unless your a natural you will struggle to actually learn how to plaster in 5 days. These 5 day trade courses seem like bit of a quick money grab and are perhaps a bit misleading Plastering looks easy but it's actually a very vast trade and any real plasterer will understand what I mean. it takes time to learn the hand skills, the timings, the right preparation for each product and back ground even the mixing requires a certain amount of skill and experience. By all means do the course and give it a go but maybe don't expect miracles Best of luck to you 👍

Apart from the cost of the course buddy, there's the cost of the materials And the tools, if you're buying the right tools for the job you could wind up paying nearly double what you've been quoted and still run the risk of not getting it quite right , best to pay the professionals and let them deal with any headaches that arise

Hi, you’ll not learn plastering in 5 days. Best off leaving it to an experienced plasterer. You never stop learning in this trade there’s always different ways of doing things & this can’t be taught in five days unfortunately as we are all show different ways. If your going to learn the trade I’d go to college or an apprenticeship,That’s my advice. Hope this helps.

Definitely not, i was at college for 2 years learning the plastering trade and doing it in the workshop is a completely different ball game from actually doing it for real, you will end up making a hash of it and will cost more to fix.

Hi I would have to say completing a 5 day course would giving you a very basic knowledge, I have been plastering for 14 years, there is so many different parts of plastering which some people dont understand, wether you are just considering skimming, it's about having the experience of things like mixing preparing a work area and having a good understanding that every job will be different for example things like temperature could have a huge part to play in this as well as the huge range of different backgrounds could cause drying issue etc, hope this helps, thanks

Find a good reliable and reasonably priced plasterer. I wouldn't waste time on a 5 day course. I've been plastering for 10 years and am always learnings new things, so I don't think a 5day course would do yourself or your pocket any good, as you would undoubtedly have to get a professional in after you've attempted to plaster yourself. Hope this helps 👍
