Plug socket tripping even though switched off

Anonymous user 27 April 2014 - 11.00 PM

We have a George Foreman and always use the same plug socket. Today part way through cooking all sockets switched off. Our fuse box has four black switches and two red. All were fine but a green switch in the middle was to the 'off' position. After testing every plug we realised it happened when the grill was plugged in to a specific socket. What was weird was that nothing needed to be switched on, just plugged in. Ideas and explanations would be welcome.

Possibly a neutral to earth fault the switch on the socket would only break the live, would trip RCD if this was the case

The switched socket has only disconnected the live the neutral still connected so there is an neutral to earth fault on the appliance.

99% likely to be a neutral to earth fault. Could well be a loose connection or even arcing or burning inside the socket, so you may want to get this checked out.

the green switch sounds like an RCD, the appliance sounds like it has a earth neutral fault, the switch on the socket only isolates the live, no need for further work, just a new grill.
