Can I board my loft for storage in a new build?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

Hi, we live in a new build 2yrs old built by Taylor Wimpey, when we bought the house we were told the roof is built only to support the roof & weight of of snow. We could put the odd thing in the loft but not much. We are now expecting our first baby and ideally want to board the loft & add a ladder for storage. Does this mean we can't do this or do we have to have the roof strengthened? How do we check what needs to be done without being ripped off? Or is this just a statement builders have to give now to cover themselves?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, I would not board the loft as most new build properties built by large developers are designed to withstand the weight of the roof and 1m of snow. In my opinion your loft floor will need to be strengthened in order to board and use this space. Best wishes. Andrew
