Composite doors (under guarantee) are hard to close - are we entitled to a new door?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

We had a composite door fitted about two to three years ago and have had the rubbers on the bottom of the door renewed at least four times. the door is fairly hard to close sometimes and rubbers keep pulling out the holders or splitting. We have been told there is no room to lift the door up in the frame. To us, the door has been made a little to large for the frame. the double glazing firm do not make the doors themselves so they give the measurements to the firm that make the doors. The doors still under guarantee so are we entitled to a new door or not? The double glazing firm say that these doors can be quite hard to close at times depending on the weather ie hot or cold. The front door was fitted at the same time and closes quite easily most of the time and rubbers have been ok so far. Yours sincerely, Brian.

It seems to me that the goods are not fit for purpose through either bad design, bad manufacturing, bad installation or a combination of the three, and that glazing firm instead of tackling the issue is playing the blame game with its supply chain, the oldest trick in the world, hoping that you give up. In this moderate climate there is no reason why a properly constructed and installed modern door, of whichever material, should not always open and close effortlessly regardless of temperature and humidity. Act now, safe in the knowledge that the law is on your side (Supply of Goods and services Act). Detailed suggestions on how to go about it starting in a fair and amicable but firm manner, on which.co.uk: "how to complain if you are unhappy with the building work". All the best.
