Painting after removing wallpaper - lining paper is still stuck fast
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.03 PM
Hi everyone, I want to paint a room which has had wallpaper on the walls. I've pulled off the wallpaper, which came away really easily, but the lining paper is still stuck fast. Do I need to pull all that off too, or can I prime/paint over the top after sanding, wiping etc?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello Alice,
It sounds like the remaining paper is in fact the backing paper of the wallpaper which you removed. It could be lining paper, if that was hung prior to wallpapering. If you are happy that the surface of the paper is smooth, and the paper is not lifting and you are happy then you should be able to paint. If it is not smooth or you are not happy with the remaining paper, then I would suggest you remove this first.
Hope this helps, and good luck.

Hi Alice
You would be better removing the backing paper. It may appear to be stuck firm but once you have given it a couple of coats of paint it may well come away if not all together, certainly in places. you will then have a greater job to remove it and have wasted your money on paint.
Happy painting :-)
