I wired additional fluorescent light to existing light in garage and it won't turn off

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.07 PM

I wired additional fluorescent lighting to an existing light in my garage. The existing light was on one light switch. After connecting the two black wires in the existing light fixture to the black line from the fluorescent light and doing the same with the white wires, the existing light works as normal on the switch but the fluorescent light always stays on. How can I get the fluorescent light to run on the switch like the existing light fixture? By the way the 2nd floor of the house is above the garage celling so unless I cut out a lot of drywall I can't run another line.

Sounds like you have cut into the looped feed and not the switchline. As this is part P notifiable works, you need to ensure that you have applied for Part P building regulation consent and paid the appropriate fees as you are liable to get fined if caught and works have not been registered with building control.

It looks like you have picked up a supply from a feed and not the switch wire, which is giving you a permanent live

Hi, not sure if you can post pictures here, but it would be helpful to see what you've done. The switch wire should be red or brown, or a black or blue wire with red or brown sleeving. White cables are normally the internal wiring for the light fitting which you don't need to touch. If you can, post a picture and I'll take a look.
