Depth of foundations and width of trench for extension

When digging foundations for an extension eg kitchen behind a mid terrace house how deep to you have to go and what would be width of the trench.

Single story would normally be 1mt below ground level 450mm wide, 750 deep concrete. double story you may have to go 600 wide, at the end of the day it will come under building regs so the final decision is with building control,
