Inset electric fire (no electricity cable to fireplace at the moment)
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
Hi I currently have a gas fire but I've been told the chimney needs work before a new gas fire can be installed. Would it be an easy enough and more cost effective to have an electrician wire a new electric fire instead?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Probably... but in my opinion its not the same...I'm just not a fan of electric fires I suppose.

You don't say what type of flooring is in the room? but if its just carpet over standard plank type floorboards, it should be a very straightforward job to lift the floorboards and run a spur to the sockets ring for the electric fire.

Bear in mind that the new electric fire unit will most likely have different heating properties, The overall unit will not sit flush 100% within the wall. Most electric fires will have a cool to touch glass front therefore heat is mainly emitted from the top vents. This also means you must consider what materials are above the electric heater and that adequate ventilation is available according to manufacturers guidelines. I would advise to run its own independent supply depending on the units power rating.
