When is it necessary to have an asbestos survey?

I'm due to have some work done on my house (re-wire and heating installation). Is it necessary to have an asbestos survey? You don't hear anyone having it for their house but then again it seems like the sensible thing to do ? How great is the risk by not checking it out ? Thanks

it is often necessary to have asbestos survey especially in properties pre 80's as asbestos was widely used in a great many products including fascia boards, soffits, tiles, wall boards, artex, pipe lagging boilers to name a few
