Asbestos roof on conservatory has come down
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.03 PM
I have recently moved into a bungalow built in 1930 approx, we have a lean to with an asbestos roof and it all has to come down. Is it safe for me and my husband to do it ourselves using protective clothing etc and bagging it safely? Also, will the council dump take it?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It is highly likely to contain white asbestos (chrysotile), which is the least harmful of the three. Ideally you should still wear full protective clothing and a mask when handling.
Some tips will take it, other won't. The best idea is to go to the main tip in you area and ask advice from them. They will give you further information and a phone number - you have to pre-book disposal. You may find they only allow three sheets, maybe a neighbour could also ring and get permission for a few more to be disposed of.
When removing wet it down, to reduce the dust and avoid breaking it.

Andrew
In response to Elite below, can I just say that white asbestos does not need a licensed contractor to remove, therefore it shows the hazards are not as great, it just needs controlled disposal - please read HSG264

Can I just say to the people who say white asbestos is less harmful. It's NOT!
The only difference being is that it dissolves in acid where as blue and brown don't.
They're all as dangerous to inhale as each other.

Not a good idea to do it yourself but If you doing it yourself I'd recommend a good quality mask, a disposable paper suit with hood , gloves. Also if your disposing of in a car Or box van I'd wrap it up in plastic sheeting and tape it up. It's very bad for your health as it lets of tiny barbs that's get stuck in your throat and never come out causing problems later in life.
It's not that bad in one peace just whatever you do don't go smashing it up as it will send them horrible barbs flying around, also hose it all down as a precaution
