Brand new bathroom fitted but hot water pressure very poor (Worcester Combi Greenstar 27CDi)

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can provide... Apologies for the length of this post - have tried to get in as many details as I could think of. We recently had a new bathroom fitted upstairs. The room was previously a bedroom and the only water that went into the room before was to a radiator (which was removed as part of the refit). Unfortunately, over the course of the installation we fell out with our plumber (as he stopped turning up - we were without a working bathroom for around a month) and, whilst he has since finished the job, the pressure of the hot water from the shower and from the bath (separate bath to shower) is considerably slower than the cold. It takes a good 30mins to fill the bath with warm water and only a dribble comes from the shower when wanting hot, but turn the mixer to cold and the water comes out at a good pressure for both bath and shower. As we are no longer on good terms the plumber is not being very helpful, hence why I am asking here. I would be very grateful if someone could please help me diagnose the cause of this - could it be that our boiler - a Worcester Combi Greenstar 27CDi - is not powerful enough (despite our plumber saying that it would be)? NB the boiler feeds the kitchen sink, the utility room sink and the downstairs loo in addition to the bathroom I refer to (with sink, toilet, bath, shower and towel rail). Or could it be that the boiler is too far away from the bathroom (it is in the room immediately below the bathroom, though must admit I have no idea what length(s) of pipe have been used)? Is it that the boiler is outdated for the size of our house (was a 3-bed, now 2-bed since bathroom put in, Victorian mid-terrace)? Or is it that something has not been fitted / installed correctly? Or something else entirely?! Thank you very much indeed, J

Hi. I have read your message, as far as i can tell, the boiler should be sufficient enough for what you require. By the sound of it, you are getting far more cold water than hot water. So there is no balance of water for your bath and shower. To resolve this you can put in a pressure reducing valve to your cold water pipe to balance the pressure for both hot and cold water. This is just my opinion but the problem may be something else, which I cannot tell until having a look. If you need any more help you can feel free to contact me.

Worth checking: Have service valves been fitted to the taps and to isolate the shower feeds? If so have 'full bore' valves been fitted? Single check valves fitted to your hot pipe might help I agree with my colleague at HM Plumbing, you may need to create a balanced cold feed, a pressure equalizing valve may be better for the shower. You didn't say of the kitchen hot water was okay but assuming it is. Nigel
