Laying a wood floor over existing tiles with underfloor heating?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.49 PM
We are moving into a new house and looking to replace the ceramic tiles in the kitchen with engineered wood flooring. The room has underfloor heating. We have been advised to just lay the wood flooring on top of the existing tiles but a reputable company, but I want to check other opinions for doing this. They've said the tiles will insulate therefore the heating will still come through. Is this okay to do? Not pulling up the tiles would save us considerably on cash, and mess! Thanks

Hello,
I have worked with wooden flooring for over 20 years and have to say that the tiles will not insulate the floor, they are cold and as such will suck heat into the subfloor therefore reducing the efficiency of the heating system. They also do not give a good subfloor surface to work on top of woof wooden flooring. The best thing to do is firstly ensure the floor is flat, smooth and even, this may need to be screeded to achieve this. Then you need to lay insulating boards over the tiles/screed, these are 5-6mm thick then lay the mats for the electric underfloor heating system and finally the flooring. If you look at the Warmup website they will explain all this in details with pictures too.
