How/when to move electric/gas meters?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.06 PM

We currently have a understairs but the only access to it is from the outside. This is where the meters are and currently the boiler (although that is changing very soon as a new one it being fitted to in the loft). Eventually I'd like to change the cupboard to be accessible from the inside and brick up the outside door. Will the electricity company move the meters to keep them outside or will I have to pay? There is a little more to this story as before we moved into the house it was on prepay meters and they're just about the change them for normal ones. Will they move them to an outside box now if I ask them nicely? Additional I contacted EDF and they said you're talking about £500 per supply to move them. Not something I'm willing to pay right now. If I turn the cupboard from outside to inside they'll just have to gain access when someone is in the house instead. No big deal. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's not free, you need to budget around £1500 to £2000 for electricity and a similar amount for gas, so circa £4000 all together. It's not cheap, but they have the monopoly and it's illegal for anyone else to do it.

It depends on how the supply cable is run, if you need to move the supply cable it won't be cheap. (This is the one that goes into the main fuse)

You usually have to pay, and I've found out from my own experience that you may have to wait some time (I waited 12 weeks). Don't forget you will have associated costs involved in resupplying your fuseboard.

Hi, as far as I know swapping meters costs the supplier about £50, moving the supply can cost from £500!
