Boiler damaged by water from flue - insurance repair or replace

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.06 PM

Hi, our system boiler was severely flooded from water ingress via flue, insurer agreed it was covered, our regular 'gas safe' plumber did a report/options but sent details direct to insurer, who agreed to cover repair. Boiler was stripped, dried and repaired but never the same, several call outs later to check and it has now packed up (will not light) water dripping out, rusty panels inside. Our plumber commented it should have been replaced when we claimed originally, insurer says plumber advised repair (repair was over £1000). Two years later boiler is dead, and we find out plumber is not gas safe registered despite having a gas safe logo on invoice for repair work - who do we get fair resolution? We were entitled to full replacement.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1st thing is engineer should have shown his gas safe I D before commencing any work involving gas appliances, also when there is water ingress into boiler it normally means boiler will need replacing, he should have informed the insurance company about this if he had any experience

Hi David, It is difficult to distinguish which contractors are actually gas safety registered and which are not (especially when they falsely advertise the logo). The "plumber" who originally installed the boiler should pay for the repairs and replacement of the new boiler. However, I do realise this would be difficult especially if you are not in contact with them. You can either, try to claim of his professional indemnity insurance (if he has it) to receive a new boiler. You could either, report it to your insurance company and see what they say, as they were also tricked into thinking that this person was qualified. If neither of the above work, you might have to pay for the replacement. I hope this helps. Best Regards, Luke Charles - Charles Francis Building Solutions
