Bitumen overlap - will render adhere to bitumen?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hello. I have recently had my terrace covered in bitumen (or similar material) which extends up the brick walls as it should, however, I would like to render these walls but I am worried that a) the render will not adhere to the bitumen and b) I do not know how to make the edge look neat and finished. The bitumen creates a kind of little slope rather than a right angle to the floor so I wonder, can anyone advise me on the best way to go about this? An additional question regarding the same wall: there are currently the end of some roof beams (hence the reason the walls need rendering) that run through the wall so the end is visible in the wall (I hope this makes sense!) can I just render straight over top as if it was just part of the brickwork or should I apply something over the end of the beam first? The beams are already treated/weatherproofed etc. Thank you for your advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you want to render over bituminous paint or similar then dash with sharp sand when wet to give a key to the render. So in your case give another coat of bitumen, dash with sharp sand and when dry apply render coats as normal.

Hi there You can screw eml wire mesh to the bottom of the wall, you can nail or stick a render stop bead to obtain a straight line neat finish. If you are worried about adhesion to the bitumen, then add sbr to the sand and cement, this is an adhesive additive to give better adhesion. Regards Joseph
