Damp Proofing

Builder caused damage to next door neighbours property

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.06 PM

Whilst working in my house doing some damp proofing work the builder accidently drilled through into my next door neighbours house. The builder has said he will repair this but the neighbour is talking about suing me and claiming on insurance etc. The neighbour is being totally unreasonable coming out with comments that if the builder damp proofs his kitchen he'll forget about what's happened. Am i liable for any of this? Additional I didn't inform my neighbours about work being carried out so the party wall act may be relevant here. I just think this guy is trying it on with me. It's a real shame cos they've done a fantastic job and one little accident has caused me loads of hassle. The builder has said he will put right the damage so I don't know why the neighbour is being so unreasonable

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there Not sure what court results would be but did you serve him notice of intended works? this would be found under the party wall act, which means you should have informed him prior to works. If you did not, he might have a case for compensation (google the party wall act) to learn more. Regards Joseph

Hello, not nice when a neighbour tries to blackmail you, leaves a bad taste in you mouth forever. The builder/contractor should be insured for this type on thing, so tell your neighbour to go through his insurance company, that's what insurance is for and when the builders insurance company contact, make sure you tell them what you neighbour implied, nobody like a bully Peter
