Why has the special radiator paint crazed when i painted it on the radiator?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.06 PM
I had a rusty paint peeling radiator which I stripped of all its paint. I then applied 2 coats of hammerite rustbeater no 1- primer & undercoat in 1, allowing 24 hrs to dry between coats. I've then gone to apply the hammerite quick drying radiator enamel onto my cold radiator with my clean, dry brush & it has crazed all over it! Why is this? & what can I do about it? It now looks terrible- should've left it with just the base coat!!!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Mandy.
It sounds like you have used two different types of paint, in fact i know you have, 1 oil based and the final coat being fast drying suggests a water based coat.
If so that is the problem.
You are best off using oil based paints on radiators as they are hard wearing, remove all rust 1st and treat with a rust inhibitor and then apply 2 further coats of oil based paint and your problem will be no longer!
I lectured painting and decorating and water based products don't work with oil based even though you allowed plenty of drying time.
Hope this helps
Andy
