New feather fencing coming apart
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.06 PM
We have had a new wooden feather edged fence put up. Where the posts meet the feathered edging -some are coming apart. The fence has only been up 2 months at the most. The builder is saying its because of the wet weather. He is proposing to put some beading in front of the gaps to hide them. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct procedure and also whether it means the fence is compromised, and weaker.

Feather edge boards should be positioned so when you are nailing the next board on top of the previous one, it misses that so the boards can move in or out with the weather i.e. expansion, nails should be at least 50mm long. The boards should over lap about 25mm
If it's the cant or arris rails that are showing a crack it means they are not nailed right they also should be in the centre of the posts, then you would not see the movement
I would tell him to take the fence to bits and do it right at his expense

Are the slats coming away from the beams that go across to the posts, if they are it means either that the nails are not holding the slats in place properly or could be too short. Wood expands when it's wet so might have contributed. It will most probably be that they were not positioned properly so the force on one another is causing them to come apart. I hope you found this useful
