light bulb blows and trips the upstairs lights

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.06 PM

Every six weeks or so I turn on my bedroom ceiling light and the bulb blows and trips out all the lights at the top of the house. I've tried every kind of light bulb from original, to energy saving, to long lasting but I've yet to go more than six weeks without a bulb blowing. Some times it trips out the upstairs circuit and sometimes it doesn't... any ideas???

Some MCB's are more sensitive than others but what happens is the surge that occurs when the bulb blows is what causes the MCB to trip. You can fit low energy bulbs. or have the 6A MCB uprated to a 10A MCB that should do the trick, but usually the majority of people live with it.

You could possibly change your MCB to a type 'C' - but would recommend that you use an electrician as it may not be a case of just a swap. Do any of the other light fittings blow lamps?

Have you tried an LED light bulb? - 99% likely to be that you have high incoming voltage and it's stressing the bulbs. A dimmer switch may help the situation but you may need your DNO to investigate the voltage at the incoming cut-out fuse and meter.
